Green Buildings

The Concept of Green Building : is essentially based on the premise that ‘ Economic development and urbanization need not go against the flow of nature’. Green Building principles reflect through the complete building life cycle and are aimed at reducing impact upon the environment. The essential element of green building is to make the most efficient use of resources such as energy , water , material and to ensure the building maintenance activities do not burden the environment.

LEED Green Building Rating System : In India is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green building. LEED provides building operators and owners with the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings performance. Some of these practices include sustainable site development, water saving, energy efficiency , material selection and indoor environmental quality.

Sustainable Design offers operational returns on investment : and is a significant and integral concept of designing green buildings. Organisations around the world now increasingly realize that the additional investments in making their structure ‘GREEN’ is not only good for the environment but also provide long-term tangible benefits in the form of lower operation cost, higher productivity and smaller carbon footprint.

Reducing the “ Water Footprint” is a part of sustainable design : A sustainable building should reduce, control or treat site –runoff, use water efficiently and reuse or recycle water for on-site use when feasible. The drivers for the rapid increase in the use of reclaimed water range from wanting to be “ GREEN” to regulatory imperative. With the advance in treatment technologies, wastewater can be reclaimed to meet the requirements for such uses as industrial cooling water, irrigation water and flush water.
